The best things in life are going to come from things that scare you. We pray for massive expansion. We want to hold these incredibly huge visions, except when we get put into the exact thing that is going to expand us. A lot of us say, get me out of here. I can't do it. This is too much. I'm not sure of myself. What about my past? What are people going to say? And we don't sit long enough in the fire to let it burn away our old form and let us stretch into the person that can handle the dream. Today I’m talking all about staying in the discomfort in order to get through it and through to the other side. I hope today’s quickie serves as a reminder or way for you to be able to get back to the heart-centered reason of WHY you’re working on your dreams.

Holy crap I’ve never felt closer to y’all! I love the show! Been listening for over a year and finally getting around to leaving a review. Just listened to a Questionably Awesome about leveling up where you talked about going home - specifically how you feel like you have to rush to get home and sit with family, and then they talk about their new shelf! I thought it was just me and it’s cool to hear that you all experience that. Also, why is that even a thing!? Anyway, love your podcast and random tangents. Makes me feel like I’m just listening to people I want to be friends with. Btw, can we be friends?! -Alicia

Whether you are being bullied online, whether you have a friend who is questioning who you are as you grow, or whether you are completely doubting yourself and not feeling smart enough, these are all opportunities to shine. I recently had an experience that I might share more about later. In the past, I would have gone to a very dark place and it would have taken me down for a really long time. This time I was able to bounce right back knowing that it is not our place to feel bad. We are meant to stay in joy because that's where we get outside of our heads and our small worlds. Six years ago Ashley LeMieux and her husband got a phone call asking them to become parents of a six-year-old and a four-year-old. They weren’t looking to adopt or foster at the time, but they said yes, and their life became all about their new family. During the final stages of the adoption process they experienced an unexpected contested adoption, which meant that they spent over a year and a half in court fighting to keep their family together. In the end the kids were taken from them with 12 hours notice and Ashley and her husband were not even allowed to tell the kids they weren’t coming home. Ashley says the past two years have been filled with her trying to figure out how to find a life again after it was all taken away. To begin she started a morning routine that added purpose back into her day. She wanted to write a book about her experiences and, after 30 different publishers said no, she figured out that no-one else’s opinion mattered and did it anyway. Her book, Born To Shine, shares stories, lessons, and practical tools to help women shine despite the darkness, to press forward one day at a time even when there is no end in sight, and to turn their most painful moments into their greatest teachers and signposts to true, deep, unassailable joy.

Today I’m talking about the side effects of following your calling. But first I want to talk about the side effects of not following your calling. If you’re not taking actions that support your highest self, you get resentful toward yourself, the people that you love of other people and people who are inspiring to you. You feel anger, anxiety, isolation, comparison, and depression. The most important thing you can do is to really take note of how you're holding yourself back and learn to move forward. But moving forward isn’t pain-free either. You’ll feel discomfort and massive fear. You’ll make new friends and mentors but they won’t let you hide. You’ll lose people along the way. In second grade Chase Jarvis loved doing stand-up comedy and produced a weekly comic book strip. Then one day at the parent teacher conference he overheard his teacher telling his mom that he was so much better at sports than he was at art. Because we gravitate to where we get rewarded, he became an athlete, went to college on a soccer scholarship and made the Olympic Development Program soccer team. Then, a week before Chase graduated college, his grandfather died from a heart attack and left Chase his cameras. Chase started teaching himself how to take pictures and that led to his career as one of the most influential photographers of the past decade, the developer of the first photo app to share images to social networks and the founder of CreativeLive. Now Chase is on a mission to break down myths about what creativity is and who can practice it. He says that when we look at all the decisions we make every day - what you're going to have for dinner, what business that you're going to build - as creative acts, that’s when we understand that we have the agency to create our lives.

He also created Best Camera--the first photo app to share images to social networks, and is the Founder of CreativeLive, where more than 10 million students learn photography, video, design, music and business from the world's top creators and entrepreneurs.

And I am so proud of myself because, looking back at last year, I had a calendar full of things that I didn't necessarily want to do. I was more reacting to life than actually taking time to think if it was something that would move the needle forward. I was doing things because I didn't want to say no and hurt people's feelings. Today’s episode is all about getting comfortable with fear and failure. These are the only things that are stopping you from living your biggest dream and living out the gifts that God gave you. And when you don’t live your biggest dream, you're stopping the person who you're meant to help from getting the help that they need. You are literally cutting off their lifeline because that message is meant to come through you. Write down what you’re afraid of to see how ridiculous your thoughts are. Are you scared that your opinionated friend Becky is going to say something on Instagram? Are you scared that your moms’ group is going to say, who do you think you are? Are you scared that your husband or ex-boyfriend will say you're failing again? I want you to literally ask pain and fear to bring it on because you can handle it. Pain and the failure is where all of the learning and value is. Bring it on. You can do hard things, you can handle hard things. You can handle feedback, you can handle criticism. You choose if you're going to get taken down or you get back up but every time you get back up, you get stronger, you grow a muscle. I hope today’s quickie serves as a reminder or way for you to be able to get back to the heart-centered reason of WHY you’re working on your dreams.
