Welcome back to Questionably Awesome! Today, Evans and I answer your questions about playing small and finding balance.

Cornelia Baum asks: Tips on finding the balance (or I like to say, finding harmony) as you're 'bootstrapping.' I'm at a point in my business where the old way isn't bringing in enough cash flow... partially because of COVID and partially because of my own burnout. I'm so lit up about the direction I'm going and what I'm creating... but constantly caught up in the band aids (side jobs) I've created to pay the bills, rather than focusing on my business and this new direction.

Chrissy Kunkel asks: I have been playing small in my interior design business and recently raised my rate. Where I'm struggling is with comparison. I'm seeing counterparts who have far less experience doing amazing things and really cool projects. I feel like my jobs suck in comparison, and I can't seem to break away from looking and staying in my own lane. How do you stay the course and not feel like you suck all the time? How can you channel this energy to grow instead of setting you back and making you feel inferior and loser-ish?

In This Episode You Will Learn About:

  • The importance of building a passive side hustle
  • The best passive side hustle choice
  • Getting over imposter syndrome
  • Finding free resources

Resources:

Show Notes:

Every person needs a passive side hustle. This is not negotiable. It’s important to build something that pays you when you’re not working, instead of your income requiring a large  investment of your time on an ongoing basis.

Your financial goal should always be to get to the point where, if one of your income sources disappeared tomorrow, you would not have to change your lifestyle. Most people aren’t there yet, but a passive side hustle — not a busy, time-consuming, expensive side hustle — is the way to get there.

One of the greatest opportunities for creating a passive side hustle right now is course development. The way people want to learn is changing forever. They want to move straight from Point A to Point B, and that’s what courses do for them. They’re not as intensive to build as people think, and once it’s launched, it will start selling while you sleep.

It’s time to take your future into your own hands. The world is too dynamic to rely on just one source of income.

Show Notes:

Your business might not be growing right now. That’s alright — we’ve all been there before. That’s why we are especially qualified to help you get unstuck and bring back the growth.

Here are the three reasons your business stops growing, and how to avoid them:

  1. You’re not growing. If you aren’t focusing on your development as a person, you cannot expect your business to continue growing as well.
  2. You’ve stopped filling the pipeline. You cannot stop collecting new audience members. Your existing customers will continue to grow and they will move on. You need to be bringing in new customers all the time.
  3. Your pricing is a race to the bottom. This shows a lack of confidence in your pricing and your product and is not sustainable. A race to the bottom always ends up at the bottom; there’s no profit to be had there.

If you can avoid these three things, you will be able to keep your business growing. If any of these sound familiar to you, it might be your key to getting unstuck.

In This Episode You Will Learn About:

  • When to make a pivot
  • Why you have permission to pivot
  • The steps to making a transition seamlessly
  • Making the leap to something new

Resources:

Show Notes:

Let’s talk about pivots! Career pivots, expertise pivots, you name it. The world has changed so quickly over the last year: people are pivoting left and right, whether out of necessity, or inspiration. And you have full permission to pivot. The expectation of staying in the same career or business your entire life is long gone.

While pivoting is always possible and may be the best decision for you or your business, it is not always easy. You will have to stand up and make yourself known for something new. You have to make it real and show up consistently. We’re going to give you the steps to making a successful pivot.

  1. Make an announcement of your pivot: tell people why you are making the change and take them along on the journey to making that decision.
  2. Transition your current audience: mix in some of your old content with some of the new content. You’ll start shifting more and more towards the new content until your old content gets completely phased out.
  3. Map out your path: you will need to transition not only your content but your income. Determine how much income you need to live the life that you want, and calculate when you can make the leap.

You have permission to pivot, you just have to put some planning into how you do it. And when you do, you'll be better off than you ever thought possible.
